Harrs Lake County Park’s annual Longleaf Celebration is taking place this year virtually.
The annual event celebrates the longleaf pine, which is native to North Carolina and other southeastern states, along with other trees and their importance.
Programs include a virtual wagon ride and interview with the NC Forest Service on May 8. On May 12 is Longleaf Forest Friends, a look at the creatures that live among a longleaf forest.
And on May 26, Smokey Bear will visit with information about forest fires and fire safety.
Also, from May 15 to May 30, you can head over to the park for a StoryWalk that features the book “Wangari’s Trees of Peace.” It’s a true story about a woman who led a movement in her homeland of Kenya to start a tree planting campaign across Africa.
More information is on Wake County parks’ website.
Most of the activities are virtual, but Harris Lake’s playground, trails and other open spaces are open. It also hosts a monthly StoryWalk.
Harris Lake County Park is at 2112 County Park Dr., New Hill.
